How to see Pink Moon in London skies this week – exact time and date

Date:

April’s Pink Moon will be visible for three nights

The moon is set to light up the skies this week with an incredible pink hue, and lucky London stargazers will hopefully be able to catch a glance. April’s full Pink Moon is expected to reach its peak on Thursday night, but will be visible for three nights in total.

This impressive lunar event will remain visible and appear full from 31st March through to 2nd April. However, stargazers will need to stay up late or wake during the early hours to catch the Pink Moon at its brightest.

Peak illumination will occur on the night of Wednesday, 1st April, with maximum fullness at 3.12am on Thursday, 2nd April. However, Londoners might need to try a bit harder to get a glimpse as there is likely to be a fair amount of cloud cover, according to the Met Office.

During the evening of April Fool’s Day, the moon is likely to take on a more orange appearance than pink due to its low position on the horizon. The Moon may display this different shade because its reflected sunlight passes through a denser layer of Earth’s atmosphere, which scatters the shorter blue and violet wavelengths, allowing the warmer red hues to come through, explains the Mirror.

Traditionally marking the arrival of spring in the northern hemisphere, the moon doesn’t actually turn pink, despite what its name suggests. The name comes from pink spring wildflowers that bloom in early April. As it’s not a supermoon, it will appear its usual size.

The moon carries various spiritual meanings from renewal and rebirth to letting go of the past, as well as growth and clarity. During a full moon, the moon’s surface is entirely lit up by the sun.

The pink moon is the fourth of 13 full moons in 2026. Anyone hoping to catch a glimpse of this stunning display can do so anywhere across the UK where skies are clear, although open, elevated spots offer a much better vantage point. For the best view, experts recommend looking eastwards at moonrise, choosing a spot away from buildings or trees, and bringing a pair of binoculars along.
