Firefighters battled a blaze at a former Birmingham social club for seven hours overnight after it ripped through the derelict building.

Six fire crews were called to the derelict Ladywood Social Club at around 10.50pm yesterday, March 28.

Ladywood Middleway was closed during the incident and people were urged to avoid the area.

Firefighters battled the blaze until around 6am today.

No injuries were reported.

West Midlands Fire Service returned to the site at 9.30am to check for ‘hot spots’. None were found.

Ladywood Social Club was once a hub for its local community. Regulars online previously described it as a ‘wonderful’ venue for live entertainment before its closure in 2019.

Birmingham City Council had granted planning permission for the Leyburn Road social club to be knocked down and 130 apartments to be built on the site in 2021.

The region’s fire control room told BirminghamLive this morning: “It was a fire in the former Ladywood Social club.

“We were first called at around 10.50pm.

“We had six crews in attendance at the height of the incident.

“No injuries were reported.

“We initially left at around 6.30am. Fire crews revisited to check for hot spots at 9.30am.

“None were found and we will no longer be reattending.”

Last night the fire service warned locals to keep their doors and windows closed.

It wrote on social media platform X: “We have six crews in attendance at a fire on Ladywood Middleway, Ladywood.

“As a precaution, if you live or work nearby, please keep doors and windows closed. Avoid the area, where possible.”
