Police search teams and forensics officers continue to monitor a woodland area days after a shooting in Speedwell – as the suspect has appeared in court today (Saturday, April 4).
The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 1, and involved a gun fired at a car on Speedwell Road at around 1.50pm. The victim, a man in his 20s, remains in hospital with serious injuries.
Avon and Somerset Police said they are continuing to support him and his family and keep them updated on their enquiries. Three schools in the area were all locked down on Wednesday afternoon as the incident unfolded.
A 24-year-old man, who has since been named as William Scammell, was arrested just after 2.30am on Thursday morning, April 2.
He has been charged with attempted murder and being in possession of a shortened shotgun. Scammell appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning, April 4, where the case was sent to Bristol Crown Court, and Scammell was remanded into police custody.
Two other people, a man and a woman both in their 20s, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. They have both been released on police bail.
And while police have confirmed they are “not looking for anyone else in connection with this incident at this time”, a cordon remains in place at St Anne’s Wood in Bristol for the fourth consecutive day since the shooting.
Police search teams, dog units, and forensics officers have been monitoring the area, which has been deemed an area of interest in relation to the incident.
Senior investigating officer Det Ch Insp Jess Aston said on Friday: “We understand this has been a very shocking and concerning incident, but we would like to reassure the public that this remains a priority investigation for us.
“Neighbourhood officers continue to conduct high-visibility reassurance patrols in the area and anyone with any concerns or questions are encouraged to speak with us.”
