TripAdvisor has compiled the ultimate list of the top 10 attractions in the world based on millions of reviews and ratings — and Edinburgh features twice
While iconic landmarks around the globe tend to dominate most travel bucket lists, the reality of visiting them doesn’t always live up to the hype.
A few years back, a disgruntled visitor to London took to TripAdvisor to grumble that ‘it’s just a really big clock’ in a scathing review of the Elizabeth Tower.
Had that visitor consulted TripAdvisor beforehand, the letdown might well have been avoided. Few platforms offer quite the same unvarnished honesty as TripAdvisor reviews, spanning the finest experiences imaginable to the telling details of what made something fall short of expectations.
Drawing on millions of ratings and reviews, the site has put together the definitive list of the world’s top ten attractions — and the results may well surprise you.
Based on the candid accounts of real travellers sharing their genuine experiences, one destination stood head and shoulders above the rest in TripAdvisor’s 2026 rankings. As the reviews continued to flood in on the world-renowned platform, Edinburgh’s Royal Yacht Britannia has been crowned the number one attraction on the planet.
The best attraction in the world
Following this remarkable accolade, Franck Bruyère, chief executive of the Royal Yacht Britannia, commented: “We are incredibly proud of The Royal Yacht Britannia’s success and wish to thank our visitors for taking the time to share their gift of feedback. Being number 1 in the world is a tremendous achievement and a testament to our team’s unwavering commitment to delivering an exceptional visitor experience.”
The vessel attracts guests from across the globe due to its magnificence and rich heritage as the former floating residence and temporary dwelling of the Royal Family. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II sailed aboard for more than 44 years, accumulating over a million miles.
The royal yacht proved the perfect accommodation for the monarchy, serving purposes ranging from state visits and official receptions to royal honeymoons and private family getaways.
One recent guest who toured the moored vessel shared: “Staff are exceptional, from entering the royal yacht to the shop. The tour is informative, brilliant and relaxed. We would 109% recommend it. Also, a must-do is to take your time, take lots of pictures, and definitely visit the tea room.”
The sixth-best attraction worldwide
Cementing Edinburgh’s reputation as a hub for culture, heritage and engaging activities is another capital-based attraction that secured its deserved position on TripAdvisor’s global rankings. Claiming an impressive sixth position, surpassing even the Eiffel Tower in Paris and Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee, is The Real Mary King’s Close.
Nestled in Edinburgh’s Old Town, beneath the vibrant thoroughfare known as the ‘Royal Mile’, lies an attraction brimming with historical tales and intrigue. This subterranean experience reveals a labyrinth of concealed streets where residents once lived, toiled and perished.
TripAdvisor notes that the location remained undiscovered and deserted for hundreds of years before welcoming visitors to explore its depths. User reviews on the platform describe it as a “fantastic experience”, while another visitor commented: “Absolutely brilliant, the tour was informative and most importantly fun.”
Scotland’s capital boasts a stunning castle, enchanting cobblestone lanes, distinctive bookshops and countless cafes, yet these particular attractions appear to eclipse them all. If Edinburgh wasn’t already on your radar, it deserves a prime spot on your essential destinations for this year before the wider world catches on to its highly-rated offerings.
