Full list of items banned from Kneecap gigs in Glasgow tonight

The West Belfast trio are playing two special shows to celebrate the release of their new album, Fenian.

A popular Glasgow venue has released a full list of banned items ahead of Irish rap group Kneecap’s back-to-back shows in the city tonight.

The West Belfast trio are playing two special shows to celebrate the release of their new album, Fenian, at The Garage on Sauchiehall Street on Sunday, May 3. The first show kicks off at 5pm while the other takes place at 8pm.

The band, made up of Liam Óg Ó hAonáidh, Naoise Ó Cairealláin, and JJ Ó Dochartaigh – released their second studio album on April 24 and are enjoying a run of album release parties, two of which have already taken place in Dundee and Newcastle. They were last in Scotland’s biggest city to play a sold-out OVO Hydro in November.

With just hours to go until the concerts kick off, The Garage has released a statement on social media to outline everything fans are banned from bringing to the club – these being flags, balaclavas, and football strips.

The statement reads: “Please note the following items will not be permitted inside the Kneecap shows on Sunday, May 3. Flags, balaclavas, football strips.

“Anyone who has any of these items on their person will have them confiscated and returned to them at the end of the concert. We appreciate your understanding on this matter.”

Kneecap announced its new album in January and said criticism from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had provided “all the motivation we needed” and dedicated the record to “everyone speaking truth to power”.

The group made headlines last year when Ó hAonáidh, who goes by the stage name Mo Chara, was charged with a terror offence. The allegation, which was dropped in September, claimed he had displayed a Hezbollah flag – a group proscribed as a terror organisation by the British Government – during a 2024 gig at the O2 Forum in London.

The band was also axed from the TRNSMT Festival last summer. The rappers were originally billed to headline the King Tut’s stage but were dropped from the line-up at the end of May over Police Scotland safety concerns.

Instead, Kneecap were booked to headline the city’s O2 Academy the Tuesday before the festival so as to not disappoint their fans who hoped to see them perform in the city. The show sold out in 80 seconds.

And the month before, police launched an investigation into Kneecap‘s highly anticipated performance at Glastonbury after they appeared on stage on Saturday afternoon amid calls for them to be axed.

Kneecap’s set was filled with expletives and calls to “free Palestine” and “f*** Keir Starmer” but the band pointed out that they did not call for a riot to take place. The police probe was later dropped.
