Thug who punched girlfriend told 'persistent, obvious lies'

Date:

‘I don’t think you are sorry at all’

A drunk violent partner punched his girlfriend in the face when she was drunk then blamed her for it.

Iulian Moldovan, 33, from Lower Meyer Street in Stoke on Trent, assaulted his partner in Fore Street in Newquay on October 27, 2023 which caused her to suffer a nose bleed and bleed all over her clothes.

A sentencing hearing at Truro Crown Court today (Thursday April 20) heard that it should have been a simple case but despite CCTV footage showing the incident, Moldovan continued to deny his fault but insisted it was his partner’s fault.

He eventually stood trial at the Crown court and was found guilty of a single count of assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm.

Speaking in his own defence through a translator, Moldovan told His Honour Judge James Adkin that he was “sorry”.

Judge Adkin would not have any of it saying: “I don’t think you are sorry at all. You say you have some difficulties understanding the court process but this was an easy case to understand.

“CCTV shows you punching your girlfriend in the face when she was drunk. She suffered a nose bleed that spilt over her trousers.

“Your defence at trial was that it was all her fault and that the CCTV had been tempered by the police. This was a childish defence. You told persistent, obvious lies.”

Judge Adkin said the incident had been aggravated by its domestic context and alcohol. He said Moldovan had shown no insight into his actions.

Moldovan has one previous conviction for criminal damage again in a domestic violence context from 2020.

Judge Adkin sentenced Moldovan to 12 months in prison suspended for two years as well as 200 hours of unpaid work and £500 in costs.
