Cornwall Ryanair flight circles overhead before diverting

Passengers had to get alternative transport home

A Ryanair flight to Cornwall ended up landing 150 miles away after the pilot was forced to make an unexpected diversion.

Passengers had a memorable end to their Algarve holidays as their plane from Faro in Portugal changed course this morning (Thursday, April 30) due to stormy weather.

The RYR9225 service was on track to arrive at Cornwall Airport Newquay at 8.31am but landed more than half an hour later instead at Bristol Airport.

Flight trackers showed the plane circling over its intended destination several times before making its way to Bristol, with Ryanair now confirming the reason.

While Bristol woke up to bright sunshine and blue skies this morning, parts of Cornwall experienced lashings of rain. The Met Office has forecast wind gusts of up to 33mph for Newquay today and photographers have been sharing moody photos of stormy seas and black clouds along the coast this morning before conditions cleared.

A Ryanair spokesperson said: “This flight from Faro to Newquay Cornwall diverted to Bristol due to thunderstorms at Newquay Airport. To get passengers to their final destination as quickly as possible, we arranged for alternative transport from Bristol to Newquay.”

The outbound 9.15am flight from Newquay to Faro was also delayed as a result, taking off at 11.30am according to the airport’s departure board. No other disruption was reported from elsewhere, with the 10.05am Loganair flight from the Isle Of Man landing as expected.

There could be more storms ahead for the South West, however, with the Met Office’s regional outlook advising: “[Expect] a sunny start on Friday but turning cloudier in the afternoon. Another very warm day with an isolated shower in the afternoon, could turn thundery by the evening. Maximum temperature 22C.

“Turning more unsettled into the weekend with more showers and possible thundery outbreaks. Staying warm for the coming days.”
