A compelling new BBC television series set within a hospital makes its return to screens this evening – and viewers have already found themselves wincing at the programme.
Originally launched back in 2018, Surgeons: At the Edge of Life is a medical documentary series following surgeons and medical staff at hospitals throughout the UK. Audiences get to see the skilled teams carry out high-risk procedures, demonstrate life-saving operations and challenge the limits of medical science.
An official synopsis states: “Transforming patients’ lives, at the cutting edge of medicine. Meet the world-leading surgeons pushing science – and the human body – to its limits.”
This month, the programme has made its comeback with a fresh new series, centred on surgeons in Scotland. On Wednesday (May 14), a repeated episode from Tuesday’s broadcast (May 13) airs and features livestock farmer Joyce – who has a rare tumour in her bile duct.

She must go through a complicated operation to get it removed. Throughout the life-saving procedure, Anya Adair and Professor Steve Wigmore face a challenging dilemma with significant implications. Additionally, surgeon Malcolm Will has undertaken an unusual case involving a tumour that has spread into his patient’s chest wall, reports the Mirror.
