Here’s everything you need to know about the dog ban on beaches in Northumberland this summer

  1. The partial seasonal dog ban will return to two beaches in Northumberland from May 1 until September 30. The summer exclusion order has been in place since 2011.
  2. The measures mean dogs are not allowed on the section of beach at Newbiggin from the breakwater beside Church Point to the access from the promenade beside Sidney Crescent, from May 1 to September 30 each year. They are also banned from the section of beach at Blyth from the access at Beachway to the access at the southern end of the Links Road car park, again from May 1 to September 30.
  3. Most people honour this annual agreement however, anyone breaching the ban will be issued with an on-the-spot fixed penalty notice of £100.
  4. Northumberland County Councillor Gordon Stewart, Cabinet member for Public Safety said: “Dog fouling is an important local issue and a summer ban on sections of these beaches was introduced fifteen years ago. It offers a compromise for local dog walkers while enabling us to keep areas dog free, clean and safe for the many children playing on these popular stretches of beach during the summer months.”
  5. Seasonal dog bans are also implemented on several beaches elsewhere in the North East each year, including Tynemouth Longsands, King Edward’s Bay, and Cullercoats Bay in North Tyneside and Sandhaven Beach, Roker Beach and Seaburn Beach in South Tyneside. A full list of locations for North East seasonal dog bans can be found here.
