Iconic Nye Bevan Statue’s Future Subject to Debate Amid Local Concerns
Cardiff, 21 July 2026 — The statue of Nye Bevan, a vital landmark situated at the end of Queen Street, is at the centre of a discussion regarding its potential relocation. Conservative councillor Sean Driscoll has suggested that the statue should be moved to a more prominent location outside Cardiff Central railway station to better honour Bevan’s contributions, particularly as the city moves forward with developments in Central Square.
Bevan, who served as the MP for Ebbw Vale from 1929 to 1960, is revered for his role in establishing the National Health Service and contributing to the creation of the British welfare state. The statue, which includes spikes designed to deter seagulls, has faced ongoing issues with bird droppings detracting from its appearance. Driscoll, acknowledging the potential sensitivity of the proposal, expressed his sincere intentions while emphasising the current site’s inadequacy. He remarked, “This gateway to the capital city of Wales would be a more befitting location to site this important statue and tribute of such an important iconic figure in the history of Wales and the United Kingdom.”
Such a move would allow visitors arriving or departing Cardiff to immediately be greeted by the image of Bevan, reminding them of his significant legacy. Driscoll continued, “If Aneurin Bevan… is the first and last thing visitors and commuters would see… it would be a reminder of what this great man of the Labour Party did.”
When presented with this proposal, council leader Chris Weaver responded by affirming the importance of Bevan’s statue remaining in the heart of Cardiff. He acknowledged that while he had not previously considered a move, he would be open to exploring the idea, provided that Bevan remains prominent and visible to the public.
Despite the discussions about potential relocation, a spokesperson for Cardiff City Council stated, “There are no plans to move the statue of Aneurin Bevan from its current location in the city centre.” The spokesperson further clarified that any relocation would involve a thorough assessment of feasibility, costs, and logistics, particularly noting that Central Square has been designed to effectively manage crowds during significant events.
Installed in its current position in 1987, the statue continues to serve as a meeting point for public demonstrations and a symbol of Bevan’s enduring influence on healthcare in the UK.
