Consultation Open on A48 Safety Improvements in Carmarthenshire

A public consultation regarding proposed safety alterations on one of Carmarthenshire’s busiest roads, the A48, is currently underway and will remain open until September 18. This initiative seeks to enhance safety and improve traffic flow along the A48, particularly between Cross Hands and Pensarn, Carmarthen.

The proposed changes include blocking off short sections of the central reservation, prohibiting right turns at various junctions, and banning U-turns at these same locations. These measures aim to reduce the risk of collisions by addressing cross-carriageway movements on this high-speed road.

The A48 is a vital transport route, connecting the M4 with the A40 and playing a significant role in accommodating holiday traffic to West Wales, as well as local and heavy goods vehicle movements.

A representative from the Welsh Government indicated that the specific details of the measures to be implemented would be announced following the consultation period. She stated, “The solution will be aimed at reducing the risk of collisions, improving road user safety, and enhancing the long-term operation of this important transport corridor.”

Proposed alterations specifically include blocking three sections of the central reservation at junction 16 (Llanarthne), junction 17 (Foelgastell), and junction 18 (Maesybont). Additionally, right turns onto the A48 from a B road at junction 14 (Llanddarog) and a C road at junction 15 (Pant-y-ffynnon) could be restricted, with right turns off the A48 at Llanddarog halted, except for local buses.

Furthermore, U-turns for eastbound traffic at Llanddarog and westbound traffic at Pant-y-ffynnon would be prohibited. The plans also include closing six lay-bys in both directions, identified as substandard.

Should the proposals go ahead, work is expected to commence in the autumn or winter and is anticipated to take around four months, depending on weather conditions. Temporary lane closures will likely be required during the construction period.

This consultation, facilitated by Carmarthenshire Council on behalf of government ministers, allows the public to voice any objections to the proposed changes ahead of the deadline.
