Plan to tackle bike thefts in Cardiff will soon be expanded

Date:

Bike lockers were introduced in the city last year amid mounting concern over bike thefts

A further 36 new cycle parking lockers will soon be installed across Cardiff city centre. The move is the latest phase in the roll out of secure bike lockers across the city with the aim of tackling bike thefts.

BikeDok has been appointed as the operator of the new bike lockers after the company secured a five‑year contract with Cardiff Council.

Bike lockers were opened in Cardiff last year to tackle bike thefts. The council also shared plans for bike hangars on residential streets, but some concerns were raised by residents about this plan after they noticed the units would be placed outside their homes. In addition to the 36 new lockers coming to the city centre, 14 units will also be installed by BikeDok outside the city centre at the following proposed locations:

  • Victoria Park in Canton
  • Turning Head Car Park in Riverside
  • Albany Road/Wellfield Road Junction in Plasnewydd.

The 14 units also include space for one cargo bike, which will mean an additional 51 new secure cycle parking units available for the public to use, Cardiff Council said.

Installation of the new units begins today, Friday April 10, with all 51 units to be fully installed and operational by the end of April.

Cyclists will be charged £1.50 a day, £7.50 a week or £20 a month to park their bikes securely in the units.

All of the new units will be fitted with solar power, removing the need to connect the lockers to the electricity grid, saving both time and money, according to the council.

To use the lockers, cyclists will need to download the BikeDok app, register an account, and follow the on‑screen instructions to book a secure parking space. They can then be confident that their bike will remain safe until they return.

A council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the issues surrounding bike theft in the city centre, so we are keen to provide more facilities for cyclists to lock up their bikes securely at a small cost, giving them peace of mind while they go about their day.

“Throughout the planning of the project, we have worked closely with South Wales Police and security experts to ensure the new lockers are safe and cannot be misused. These are additional facilities, as the existing steel stands, which are free to use, will remain for anyone who wishes to park their bike at no cost.”

Six lockers will be installed at each of the following locations:

  • The National Museum Cardiff
  • Queen Street West
  • Park Place
  • Hills Street
  • Central Library
  • St Mary Street.
