Teenager arrested after knife dumped in bin at city park

Officers recovered the knife which was inside a sheath

A bag of drugs and a knife were found by police discarded in bushes and in a bin in a Nottingham park.

The items were discovered after a suspect ran away from officers, who were patrolling Green’s Mill Park in Sneinton, around 11am on Wednesday (April 1).

A teenager spotted them and ran through a play park and the response team gave chase and caught up with the suspect where he was arrested.

Officers recovered a bag which was found to contain suspected heroin and cocaine, as well as cash. Members of the public then told officers they had seen a knife being discarded into a bin.

Officers recovered the knife which was inside a sheath. A number of officers were verbally abused while the arrest and detention of the suspect took place.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, possession of a knife in public and threatening behaviour.

Inspector Steve Dalby, neighbourhood policing inspector for City South, said: “Officers working across the City South know that tackling drug crime is a key priority.

“For this arrest, we were in the right place at the right time and responded quickly when the suspect ran from the scene.

“Knife carriers will often look to discard a weapon when they are approached by us, with no regard whatsoever to who might later find it.

“I’m grateful to the members of the public for their assistance and sorry they had to witness this sort of behaviour in one of our community open spaces.

“Officers are continuing to patrol hotspot areas for drug crime and dealing in our parks and open spaces will always be met with a firm response. We’d urge anyone aware of it taking place in their neighbourhood to let us know so we can take appropriate action.”
