Thousands of cars have been seized across the West Midlands because the driver failed to do one thing

The blight of vehicle users driving without any insurance in the West Midlands has led to more than 25 being taken off the streets every day of the year on average.

West Midlands Police seized a staggering 9,501 vehicles for being driven without insurance in 2025.

That is an average of more than 26 cars being taken off the streets every single day.

The number of cars seized for the driver not having insurance, jumped by 1,028 last year compared to 2024.

Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) confirmed that Birmingham has four of the top 15 postcodes for uninsured drivers, with two of the top three – B25, the Yardley area and B18 which includes Windon green, Hockley and Soho.

Sandwell, which neighbours Birmingham, is fifth in the list with its B66 postcode that includes Smethwick, Bearwood and Warley.

A flash, uninsured Lamborghini was seized earlier this month on Belgrave Middleway on a couple’s wedding day.

A police spokesperson said: “Driving without insurance is dangerous, costly, and can have life-changing consequences.

“We work closely with the MIB to target drivers who fail to ensure their vehicles.

“Uninsured drivers are statistically more likely to be involved in collisions and are often linked to wider criminal activity.

“In fact, recent operations have uncovered serious crimes, including violent offences, drug supply, and knife crime.

“In the UK, every driver must have at least third-party insurance before getting behind the wheel. Yet thousands still take the risk, putting themselves and others in harm’s way.”

Anyone caught driving without insurance faces a a £300 fine, six penalty points, and in serious cases, an unlimited fine, a driving ban, and even having your vehicle seized and destroyed.

The [police spokesperson said: “Losing your car also means losing your freedom – no way to get to work, take the kids to school, or travel where you need to go.”

Chief Inspector Keeley Bevington from the force’s Roads Policing Unit, added: “Driving without insurance is a serious risk to everyone on the road. If you choose to break the law, you’re not only endangering lives but also jeopardising your own future.

“Our officers are working around the clock, every single day, to identify uninsured drivers and take action.

“We will find you, we will seize your vehicle, and we will prosecute. The message is simple: stay insured, drive responsibly, and help us keep our roads safe.”
