'Outrage' as man seen urinating on Bristol war memorial

Date:

Police were called to the incident

A young man was seen urinating on a war memorial in Bristol late last night (Friday), leaving one onlooker ‘outraged’.

The incident took place at around 11.30pm on Friday, April 3, at the Bristol Cenotaph on Colston Avenue. A young man, seemingly in his late teens or early 20s, was seen relieving himself on the monument.

The incident was witnessed by one ‘outraged’ passer-by who called the police to the scene.

Andrew Burgess said: “I was really outraged. I felt it was hateful, so I just had to follow him and immediately call the police. I knew I had to do something.

“It’s not just the disrespect, acid from urine is bad for it [the war memorial] as well. I just can’t imagine why he decided to use that exact spot which is dedicated to our heroes.”

Andrew described the man as being in his late teens or early 20s, about 5ft tall, with black hair, dark skin, and dressed in designer clothing, with a ‘white-looking coat’.

He said: “He didn’t seem drunk. It looked like he was taking selfies immediately after doing it, or on a video call to a friend while still stood on the statue.

“As soon as I saw it I dialled 999 and followed him down the street. The police stayed on the phone, and I then also flagged down a passing police car as I was on the phone to 999.

“They took the phone off me and asked me what I saw, then said it was coming through their radio and said they would talk to him and that I could leave.

“He was with one other friend when he did it, and towards the end of the time I was watching three other young males had joined him and they were all talking outside a shop. I’m hoping the war memorial is on CCTV, as it is such a high-risk area.”

Avon and Somerset Police has been contacted for comment.
