Another Cornish beach dubbed 'tropical' and 'better than Caribbean'

Date:

Golden sand, azure sea and palm trees with visitors praising it as ‘gorgeous’ – but one pointed out it ‘costs [as] much as the Caribbean to visit!’

The UK, as an island nation, is home to stunning beaches, and we in Cornwall have long known we have the best of them.

And yet another has been hailed as “better than the Caribbean”.

This time the glowing endorsement refers to Porthminster Beach in St Ives, where someone not from round here discovered for themselves how it features strikingly blue waters and near-white sand, as showcased in footage shared on Instagram by beautiful.cornwall.

trouper1green remarked: “Fgs it’s gorgeous. I don’t want to go to the Caribbean. It’s never interested me at all.” However, Karen Haines noted: “Costs [as] much as the Caribbean to visit!”

One viewer expressed annoyance at something spotted in the clip. They commented: “Still have to see a fricking Ford Transit van. Brits are obsessed with goddamn vans.”

The now defunct Visit Cornwall described the location as a “classic crescent of golden sand, clear azure sea and waving palm trees; with glorious views”. The beach has earned prestigious awards – including the Seaside Award and a Blue Flag – and benefits from an “abundance of cafes, shops, art galleries, and restaurants” a short stroll away.

One establishment – right on the beach – has received particular praise from a Reddit user.

They stated: “Porthminster Beach Cafe does amazing fish and chips (a bit pricier than others but worth it). The smoked haddock fish chowder is next level good.”

Another visitor mentioned that the same venue serves “lovely” light lunches and evening meals.

They continued: “They have a higher end restaurant also but the beach bar is fab.

“Get the positioning right and you can get a photo that looks like you’re in the tropics!” Another user recommended: “Book the Porthminster cafe and ask for a window or outside table. [It’s] worth it, both food and view.”

TripAdvisor describes the cafe as follows: “Perched right on the beach, the cafe’s white art deco building is perfectly positioned to capture picture postcard views across St Ives Bay.

“The food expresses a similar affinity with its surroundings from the freshest seafood straight from the boat, to herbs and vegetables grown in the restaurants own adjacent garden plot.”

The website describes the coastal spot overall as a “lovely” stretch of sand, “a favourite place for a family outing”, with views extending to Godrevy Lighthouse in the distance.
