It wasn’t tourists
It was a race against time after a car got stuck in the sand on a harbour in Cornwall.
While it’s only Easter break and the sun has been in and out, so the beaches are still pretty clear, and the roads are not as busy as they will be, incidents like this can be seen as a sign that the tourists are starting to arrive in bigger numbers.
But in this instance, CornwallLive understands it was a local’s vehicle.
The footage which you can watch above captures the scene in St Ives Harbour at about 5pm on Wednesday (April 8).
The incident involving the Land Rover Freelander unfolded a couple of hours after low tide, as the water rose.
It’s not known how long the 4×4 was in that position but a rescue operation swung into action shortly after 5pm.
Another vehicle was driven round the back of the stuck car and a tow rope tied between the two.
The Freelander was then pulled backwards off the beach.
In a scene of a different kind involving a driver unfamiliar with local roads last week a car was captured on video going the wrong way on a dual carriageway at Truro. See the video and full story here.
And in an incident very similar to this week’s, a Land Rover got stuck just around the corner in St Ives at Porthmeor Beach in July of 2023, although likely involved locals as it was being used to help with equipment, transporting a generator, for an outdoor cinema screening. See that video and full story here.
In July of last year, a Dacia found itself mired in the sand at Towan Beach in Newquay for several hours before it was eventually towed free. Full story here.
