Councillors ‘reluctantly’ gave the proposals the go-ahead at the meeting
55 new homes on a “very dangerous” Essex road will be built. Councillors have “reluctantly” given the proposals the green light for the new homes near Steeple Road and Mill Road, Mayland.
Maldon District Council’s south eastern area planning committee debated the plans on April 8 and the meeting was attended by “so many members of the public.”
The controversial plans received 59 objections and were branded as “disgraceful”, with fears raised about the fast road, “making it very dangerous” and a lack of facilities close by.
The plans include cycle and car parking, bungalows and two storey homes, 45 per cent affordable housing and a central park. It comes after previous plans for a 60-bed care home, at the site, were approved but a later proposal for 57 homes was thrown out.
One worried female campaigner, wearing a large hat decorated with colourful plumes of feathers, told the meeting it would be “unsustainable.” She added: “The fact we’re all here again, is a matter of disrespect, contempt and greed on the part of the developer.”
Councillors raised various concerns including the distance from services and lack of footpaths. Councillor Linda Haywood added: “The only shop nearby is on a 40mph road, with intermittent footpaths, to get to that petrol station you’ve got to cross that road. You cannot see to cross that road, it’s the most dangerous place to be.”
A spokesman for the developer, Savannah Properties, said the development will bring forward redevelopment on a site that’s currently “unkept” and derelict and bring it “back into positive use.” He added: “This is not a speculative development but is one that can be built quickly, with much needed new homes occupied within the next few years.”
