It’s a lovely area – but could be haunted by a notorious ghost
Nestled in a small corner of Essex lies a little-known gem of a beach. The quaint beach on the outskirts of rural Essex may just be the perfect spot for a peaceful day out.
Creeksea is a village located just west of the stunning waterside town of Burnham-on-Crouch on the Dengie Peninsula. Offering plenty of independent businesses, eateries, and beauty spots, Burnham-on-Crouch is the usual option for passing visitors.
However, many neglect to realise the gorgeous scene that lies just a scenic walk away – its almost-hidden beach. Through dense woodland is a small stoney beach where visitors can relax or go for a dip in the River Crouch. With panoramic views of the sky and limited human influence, the beach remains popular for couples and families to enjoy a peaceful swim.
The beach is accessible for cars via Ferry Road or “off the beaten track” for walkers from Burnham-on-Crouch Harbour. You will also be just a stone’s throw away from Creeksea Barns and the adjacent Parlour Cafe, which offers amazing breakfasts and lunches, as well as a spa, a gym, holiday lets and even an escape room.
Alongside the caravan park lies the historic Creeksea Place, a 16th century manor house set among the woods and complete with ornamental lakes. The house is touted to have been the home of Anne Boleyn, with her ghost said to have been seen walking near the grounds.
There is a small boathouse operated by Creeksea Sailing Club, which often launches boats for races on the Crouch. The beach has an interesting history, previously having been used during World War II by the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy.
If you are a keen walker, the beach is on a simple circular walk from Foundry Lane Car Park in Burnham. Walk from Foundry Lane to the walking path on your right, which will take you across a field to the cafe, passing grape vines and the small paddocks. From here you will follow the path round to the left until you see a footpath on your right.
Following this footpath straight down you will go past a small farm before finishing at the beach. If you turn left at the beach and follow the footpath round, you will pass some large homes on your left, before arriving back on the field. You can either continue walking the coastal path towards the marina or return via the cafe route. The postcode for the beach is CM0 8PL.
