Leeds charity worker sacrifices Easter Sunday to serve 100 meals to the homeless

One Leeds charity worker was up before dawn cooking 100 breakfasts for people sleeping rough on Easter Sunday

While many families were tucking into Easter brunch and watching children hunt for chocolate eggs, one Leeds charity worker was already hours into a very different kind of morning.

Becky Joyce, co-founder of Homeless Street Angels, spent her Easter Sunday cooking and delivering 100 full breakfasts to people sleeping rough in the city, battling cold and wet conditions brought on by Storm Dave.

For Becky, going the extra mile is nothing new, but her efforts this weekend struck a chord with many after she shared a glimpse of her day on social media.

Taking to Facebook to share some pictures of yesterdays outreach, along with the 100 full English breakfasts she and her team had cooked to try and put a smile on the face of those spending Easter on the streets.

Becky said: “Yesterday not only did we cook 100 meals for the homeless and take them out on the streets along with Easter eggs I had to wake up very early to prepare a trail for my grandson to his new trampoline with all his gifts from the Easter bunny before he woke up. “Outreach was done by 1pm and I had 22 members of the family around for Easter lunch and an Easter egg hunt.”

It was a packed schedule by anyone’s standards, starting before dawn and only slowing down well into the afternoon, but as usual Becky appeared to take it all in her stride.

Her post quickly drew praise from members of the local community, many of whom were left in awe of her energy and commitment despite her own personal struggles with her health.

Christine Kirkbride Cavney commented: “Well done Becky, you arranged a great Easter outreach for the guys today. You’ve then gone home fed all the family, and made lovely memories for the kids. I wish I had an ounce of your energy.”

Sandra Elaine Hayton said: “Wonder woman, superwoman, hero, angel…all wrapped into one beautiful package.”

For those on the receiving end of the breakfasts, the gesture was about more than just food. With stormy weather making life on the streets even harsher than usual this weekend, a hot meal and a small Easter treat offered a moment of comfort and care.

And while most people were able to spend the day with loved ones, Becky showed that, for some, Easter is also about looking after those who might otherwise be forgotten.
