Leeds police station to be transformed into 127 new homes despite safety fears

Date:

The site has previosuly been used for TV production and a nursery and creche.

Plans to transform a former police station into residential properties have been given the green light after a legal agreement was finalised.

The former Weetwood Police Station in north Leeds is set to be knocked down to make way for 127 flats. Councillors initially put the scheme forward for approval at a plans panel meeting in January 2025.

Weetwood Developments Ltd has since reached an agreement on a series of planning conditions with Leeds City Council. A planning officer’s report stated: “The proposed building incorporates an L-shaped format which ranges between four and six storeys in height.

“The building also incorporates a work from home area adjacent to the building entrance for use by residents.”

The existing buildings on the site had been used for TV production and a nursery and crèche following its closure as a police station.

Adel Neighbourhood Forum lodged objections to the planning application regarding the scale and design of the proposed building, as well as road safety concerns on the nearby Lawnswood roundabout. Reservations were also raised regarding the applicant’s contribution towards affordable housing.

However, council planning officers recommended that the scheme be granted approval.

Planning documents reveal that conditions permitting the development to proceed were agreed between the council and the developer on April 15.
