YouTube couple Danny and Sophie Malin left emotional after a Whitby chippy visit
A Whitby fish and chips afternoon tea left YouTube couple Danny and Sophie Malin emotional during a family day out by the sea.
The popular content creators were left unexpectedly emotional during a family day out after a seaside chippy experience struck a nostalgic chord for Sophie.
Danny Malin and his wife Sophie, known to their fans as Mr and Mrs Yorkshire, recently headed to the coast with their young daughter Athena, documenting their visit in their latest vlog. The trio called in at Hetty and Betty’s, a quirky café and bistro known for putting a creative twist on the traditional fish and chips experience.
The family decided to try the venue’s much talked about afternoon tea offering. Danny opted for the classic fish and chips version, while Sophie, who follows a mostly plant based diet, chose the vegan alternative of “vish and chips”. Meanwhile, little Athena enjoyed a children’s afternoon tea complete with fish and chips.
Excited to see what the unique concept had to offer, Danny shared his thoughts as they arrived in his usual humorous tone.He said: “The reason why we have come here today is because a lot of people come to Whitby to find fish and chips and it just littered at the front with fish and chip shops all serving up some of the best fish and chips, but this place are doing it with a bit of a twist.
“This could be my cup of tea because not only do you get fish, chips and peas, although no gravy which is a bit of a sticking point, but you get it as an afternoon tea, so you get your Whitby fish, chips and peas and then you also get a freshly baked scone with jam, clotted cream and a cup of tea… come on! I’m looking forward to this.”
Sophie was equally eager, particularly because of the inclusive menu options. She said: “I am buzzing about this place because normally Danny gets to try everything out but this place does vegan, gluten free, children’s afternoon tea there is everything to try. I’ll be honest I have never had “vish” and I haven’t had chips since I was very little so I’m very excited, although a bit nervous actually.”
The couple joked with each other throughout, with Danny quipping: “I’m getting a proper one aren’t I, don’t stitch me up with vish!” Sophie responds: “No, no you’re not getting ‘vish’ don’t worry!”
When the food arrived, Danny wasted no time in tucking in, clearly impressed. He said: “All I have got to say is wowzers, I’ve decanted it on to the plate, put my salt and vinegar on. I’m liking this, these fat chunk chips are amazing, look at them. “The chips have got a really nice crisp on the edge but soft and fluffy inside, the fish had a nice crisp to it, not a bad bit of cod that, it smells good. You know what I’m sorry Soph, I’m going to say it again, I’ll have to fetch Gary here for afternoon tea, he will not expect this…Fish and chips on an afternoon tea, fantastic.”
But it was Sophie’s reaction that truly captured the moment. Trying chips for the first time in decades after years of battling with food phobias, she became visibly emotional. She said: “This sounds really sad, I feel emotional. I haven’t had chips since I was about 8. I haven’t had this for so long, when you are brought up in Yorkshire chips, mushy peas, it’s part of your heritage and your culture. For the past 30 years now I have missed out on that, I’m tearing up, I blame pregnancy but that has made me feel really emotional.”
What started as a regular food review quickly became a touching moment for the couple, showing just how powerful food memories can be, especially when shared with family by the seaside. Watch the full YouTube video, here.
