'I don't want my baby to die': Mum, 19, has world turned upside down in seconds

Bury mum Tiffany has ‘lost everything’ including the presents she bought for her son’s third birthday

A young mum is battling to ‘rebuild’ her family’s lives after a devastating fire – days before her son’s third birthday. Tiffany Nield saw her world turn upside down when a blaze broke out at her Bury home on Sunday evening (April 26).

The 19-year-old was at home with her two sons, aged two and one, when she heard a ‘bang’ before seeing smoke fill her living room. Filled with panic, Tiffany recalls screaming ‘I don’t want my baby to die’ before her young family were helped out of the building.

She told the Manchester Evening News: “We were just doing our basic day-to-day life and an electrical fire broke out in my front room. The smoke was very black, thick, and I couldn’t see at all.

“The fire spread so quickly. I just remember screaming ‘someone please help me, I don’t want my baby to die, please help me’ over and over.

“My neighbour’s boyfriend just ran straight into the fire and helped me get my children out. It was a very scary, traumatic time, and I will forever be so grateful for him and the fire brigade that night and everyone around me who helped.”

The family had suffered smoke inhalation following the blaze, according to Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS). Tiffany says the trio ‘lost everything’ in the blaze – including the presents she had bought for her eldest son ahead of his third birthday on Saturday, May 2.

She said: “We lost everything in our home – all my children’s things and all my son’s birthday presents for Saturday. There were a lot of police and fire department people there. They came very quickly and got me and my children the help we need.”

In the aftermath of the fire, a friend set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to support the family. Tiffany added: “We’re doing okay during this hard time. We’re just trying to rebuild our lives back up.”

GMFRS confirmed it attended the fire at around 8pm on Sunday. Four fire engines from Bury, Whitefield and Farnworth were called out to the scene.

A GMFRS spokesperson added: “Firefighters used six breathing apparatus, two hose reel jets, a positive pressure ventilation unit, breaking in gear, gas monitor, a thermal imaging camera and scene lighting to extinguish the fire and clear the smoke. Three casualties were assessed on scene by fire service personnel suffering smoke inhalation who have been advised to attend hospital for precautionary checks.

“Fire crews were on the scene for around one hour and 45 minutes.” To see the fundraiser and donate, click here.
