Stockport Council to Install ANPR Cameras at Local Junctions to Enhance Road Safety and Reduce Congestion
Stockport Council has announced the installation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras at two significant junctions in the borough, aimed at improving road safety and alleviating traffic congestion.
The cameras will be operational at the junction of the A6 and New Moor Lane, close to Sainsbury’s and Stepping Hill Hospital, as well as at the junction of Massie Street and High Street in Cheadle village, where right turns are currently prohibited. These measures are designed to assist in enforcing traffic restrictions and will eventually lead to fines for drivers contravening these rules.
Stockport Council stated, “These changes will help make resident journeys in the borough quicker by limiting unnecessary traffic holdups, and also safer by reducing illegal traffic movements.”
It has been noted that the cameras will not be activated immediately upon installation. Firstly, the sites will need to be prepared, and the cameras must undergo testing before enforcement begins. The council has also indicated that once the enforcement starts, there will be an introductory six-month period during which motorists will receive a warning notice rather than a Penalty Charge Notice for their first infraction. Subsequent contraventions in that period may result in fines.
Additionally, future plans include the installation of cameras at the Georges Road/A6 junction in Heaton Norris and at the A6/Bramhall Lane junction near The Blossoms pub in Davenport.
These enhancements follow government permission granted in 2022, allowing councils outside London to deploy ANPR cameras to enforce traffic laws.
