Woodhead Pass closed to high-sided vehicles as Storm Dave blows in

Gusts of up to 75mph are forecast on high routes

The Woodhead Pass has been closed to high-sided vehicles tonight as Storm Dave hits the UK. An amber weather warning for wind has been issued for parts of northern England, Scotland and Wales on Saturday evening, the Met Office added as it warned of flying debris possibly leading to injuries or danger to life’.

Gusts of up to 75mph are forecast on higher ground. Parts of Lancashire, North Yorkshire, Northumberland, north Wales and Scotland are covered by the amber warning, which comes into effect at 7pm on Saturday and is due to remain in place until 3am on Sunday.

In a statement National Highways said: “The A628 Woodhead Pass is closed in both directions between the A616 (Flouch) and the A57 (Hollingworth) for high sided and vulnerable vehicles due to strong winds Road users are advised to use the M60, M62 and M1 as an alternative route. Road users are also advised to allow extra time for their journey.

“Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”

Drivers travelling across the north tonight are being warned to plan for disruption as the storm comes into force. National Highways said: “Although the event is expected to be short-lived, it is likely to produce widespread gusts of 55-65 mph with a risk of 65-75 mph locally along coastal areas and higher routes.

“Winds will be accompanied by periods of squally rain, occasionally heavy, which may make driving conditions particularly challenging. Winds are expected to peak just before midnight, bringing a risk of fallen trees and high-sided vehicles being blown over, before gradually easing from the west later in the night.”
