Motorcyclist dies following collision near North East beauty spot

A motorcyclist has sadly died following a collision near a North East beauty spot. Emergency services were called to a collision between a car and a motorbike on the B6276 near Selset Reservoir just before 2.30pm on Saturday.

Police, paramedics, and the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) attended, however, the rider of the motorbike was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car is believed to have suffered minor injuries, Durham Constabulary said.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We were called to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the B6276, Lunedale, just before 2.30pm on Saturday, April 25. The incident involved a Kawasaki motorbike and a VW T-Cross car.

“Sadly the rider of the motorbike, a man in his 70s from the Greater Manchester area, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

“The driver of the car, a woman in her 30s, is believed to have suffered minor injuries.”

The road has remained closed for several hours as 999 crews responded to the incident. In an online statement at the time, Durham Constabulary said that the B6276 would be closed between Selset Reservoir and Brough “for an number of hours” and advised motorists to find an alternative route.

A North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) spokesperson said, “We received a call to 999 at 14.22 this afternoon (25/4/26) to reports of a serious road traffic collision on the B6276 in Lunedale between a motorcyclist and a car. We sent a clinical team leader, air ambulance, emergency ambulance crew and a community paramedic.”

A Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) spokesperson said: “Our critical care team was activated at 2.26pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the B6276 in Lunedale. We had a paramedic and doctor on board our aircraft and they arrived on scene at 2.44pm.”
