Moving funeral held for unknown baby boy found under floorboards

Date:

The baby skeleton was discovered by a contractor at a home wrapped in newspaper from 1910

The moving funeral of an unknown baby that was found under the floorboards of a County Durham home has taken place. The baby boy’s skeleton had twine around its neck and was wrapped in a newspaper when it was discovered by a contractor on July 29 2024 at a home on Fore Bondgate, Bishop Auckland.

Following the discovery, the contractor – who was working on the building – contacted Durham Constabulary. As previously reported in Chronicle Live, an inquest into the death of the baby was formally opened this month at County Durham and Darlington Coroner’s Court in Crook by Senior Coroner Jeremy Chipperfield.

The skeleton had been wrapped in a newspaper called ‘The Umpire’ and was dated June 1910. Forensic work, including carbon dating, confirmed the baby was male and dated back to before 1955.

Death ‘unascertained’

The cause of the baby’s death remains “unascertained”, but DNA samples confirmed it was a 38 to 40 week full-term male foetus. The inquest was told that it is unable to be determined if the baby was stillborn or not but was “not alive during the nuclear era”.

Durham Constabulary and Durham County Council arranged a burial for the baby at Bishop Auckland Town Cemetery, which took place on Monday afternoon. The baby’s coffin was brought into the cemetery and lowered into the ground by members of Charlotte Fleming Funeral Services.

‘Time of reflection’

Celebrant Gemma Dobson then gave a reading. She said: “It is a privilege to be here with you today, to lead this time of reflection and remembrance. We gather here in this quiet place to honour and lay to rest a child now known to us as Baby Auckland. We come together in stillness and respect, drawn by a shared sense of compassion, and by a simple human desire to acknowledge a life with dignity.

“In giving this child a name we recognisee their place among us, a name given with thought, a name that holds a community, and a promise that this child will be remembered. It is often said that every life, no matter how brief, leaves its mark upon the world Today, we are here because it is true.

“Though we do not know the details of their days, we stand here knowing something simple – this child was here, and this child is worthy of love, dignity, and rest. Today, Baby Auckland is not alone.

“They are held in the thoughts of those who have cared for them, in the kindness of those who have brought them to this moment, and in the hearts of the people of Bishop Auckland.”

She added: “May Baby Auckland be surrounded by tenderness, carried in quiet remembrance, and held always as part of this community. May this be a place where they are known, honoured, and remembered with care.”

‘Thought-provoking case’

Assistant Chief Constable Jon McAdam, alongside partners, laid a floral tribute for the baby. Following the service, Detective Chief Inspector Mel Sutherland, paid his respects.

He said: “This has been a deeply thought-provoking case. Coming together today has allowed us to properly acknowledge this little boy’s life and ensure he was laid to rest with the dignity and respect he deserved. We hope he may now rest in peace.”

Cllr Cathy Hunt, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for children and young people’s services added: “Sadly, for reasons we will never know, this little boy was never given the dignified and appropriate burial he deserved, so it was important that he was laid to rest in a way that honoured a life that could have been. We’d like to thank everyone who attended today’s funeral and we hope Baby Auckland can now rest in peace.”

The inquest of Baby Auckland was adjourned until Monday, May 18.
