Graeme Souness Featured in New ITV Game Show, Discusses Heart Health

Edinburgh’s Graeme Souness is set to appear in the premiere of ITV’s new programme, “The Box”, on Saturday evening. The 73-year-old former professional footballer, manager, and television pundit joins a line-up that includes other well-known personalities such as Danny Aarons, Ellie Taylor, Joey Essex, JB Gill, Jenny Ryan, John Bercow, Ranvir Singh, Sara Davies, and Shakira Khan.

Beyond his television debut, Souness has openly discussed his health challenges, particularly following a heart condition diagnosis at the age of 38. Speaking with the British Heart Foundation, he shared insights about his journey with heart disease, which began while managing Liverpool in 1991 when he experienced sleep issues and chest pains.

Despite a lack of clear warning signs, Souness underwent an electrocardiogram, resulting in a diagnosis of three blocked arteries and coronary heart disease. This led to his preparation for open heart surgery within five days.

During a 2021 appearance on the British Heart Foundation’s podcast ‘Ticker Tapes’, he recounted his shock at the diagnosis, questioning, “how can this happen to me?” He expressed relief at the early detection, stating, “I didn’t have the obvious symptoms that there was something badly wrong with my heart so I’m so glad I got checked when I did.”

Souness emphasised the importance of health checks, particularly for those with a family history of heart issues, stating, “If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. At that time I was a very fit, young man. If you’re concerned about your family history, go and get checked.”

In 2015, Souness suffered a heart attack but has since become an ambassador for the British Heart Foundation, actively participating in campaigns and visiting research facilities.

“The Box” premieres on Saturday 5th September, with Episode 2 airing on Sunday 6th September on ITV1, ITVX, STV, and STV Player.
