Simon Cowell gives Welsh school choir the ultimate Britain's Got Talent surprise

Date:

The judge surprised 70 members of the choir of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, when they believed they were performing at the unveiling of a statue

Britain’s Got Talent’s Simon Cowell pranked a group of school boys from Cardiff before revealing a huge surprise. The judge surprised the choir of Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf, when they believed they were performing at the unveiling of a statue of someone influential in music. What they didn’t know is that it wasn’t a real statue at all, in fact it was the reality star himself.

In a sneak peak of the episode of Britain’s Got Talent which will air tonight, (Saturday, April 11) at 6.45pm, audiences can see the judge tricking the 70-strong choir before inviting them to audition for the show.

In on the surprise was their tutor, Lloyd Macey, who himself appeared on season 14 of X Factor back in 2017. He was part of the boys category and was mentored by Louis Walsh before being eliminated in the semi final.

Lloyd, who is the choir’s conductor, nominated them to audition for the talent competition. He said: “This is so exciting.

“I didn’t really have that much in school. It wasn’t cool to sing in the choir, and I just think you can get as many boys to enjoy singing and bring back that tradition in Wales as well.

“They absolutely love Britain’s Got Talent and I would just love them to feel what I felt on X Factor and it will just be totally amazing. It’s super exciting.” For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

A visibly excited Simon replied: “By the way, I love these moments.”

Everyone then got into position for the big reveal, where the boys counted down to the unveiling of “the statue”.

Simon then surprised the boys, which lead them to all jump around in excitement. One of the students said: “You’re much better than a statue.”

Simon later added: “Your choirmaster has tricked you because you will be performing on Britain’s Got Talent later.

“It’s gonna be good.”

A source told The Sun: “It was such a touching moment. You could see the recognition hit Simon instantly when he reunited with Lloyd. There’s a lot of history there – Lloyd was the lad who brought his Nan in to feed Simon fish finger sandwiches!

“Seeing Lloyd go from a nervous contestant to a confident mentor leading these kids was incredibly nostalgic.

“It was a sweet, full-circle moment for them both. Simon was beaming with pride, he introduced Lloyd to his fellow BGT [judges] like he was a family member”

You can watch the boys perform on Britain’s Got Talent tonight on ITV1 and ITV X from 6.45pm.
