What reviewers say about Super Furry Animals reunion gigs ahead of Cardiff show

Super Furry Animals fans are looking forward to the band’s homecoming gig in Cardiff this weekend

Legendary Welsh band, Super Furry Animals are back in Cardiff this weekend, May 16, at the city’s Utilita Arena. Fans are gearing up for a big Saturday of partying, with an all-day SFA event at Clwb Ifor Bach, the gig in the evening and they’ll also be doing a spot of shopping at the pop-up merch store in St Davids.

Those interested to know about how the Supacabra reunion tour has been going so far, we’ve picked out a number of comments from live reviews of the show.

The Guardian ranked the Glasgow Barrowlands gig four stars and picked out Gruff Rhys’ vocals – “It doesn’t get said enough that Rhys is a beautiful singer. Live performance makes this clear. His voice is essentially mournful, but the songs are so sweet with melody that the impression is of Eeyore transcendent – becoming Tigger through the transforming power of pop.”

Reviewer, Peter Ross, also said that the band’s “madcap reputation has tended to obscure what they really are: a formidable songwriting force.” From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What’s On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here.

The Times gave a postive four out of five stars with a pair of fresh eyes on the Furries action – often quite quizzical about what was happening on stage despite it sounding par for the course for anyone who’s been to multiple gigs over the years.

Ed Power wrote of the Dublin gig: “There were moments early in Super Furry Animals’ first concert in ten years when it seemed Britpop’s one-time psychedelic pranksters were still emerging from hibernation. The newly reunited band walked on stage at the 3Olympia in Dublin in near darkness and plunged into the sludgy comedy pop of Wherever I Lay My Phone (That’s My Home), a throwaway song from 1999 about how much the singer Gruff Rhys adored his shiny new Nokia back in the day.

“If the jokey beginning rang alarm bells, Super Furry Animals soon put fans’ minds to rest as they blitzed through a giddy, gargantuan greatest hits set.”

He also gave a nod to the band’s Welsh language material musing: “Long before Kneecap and their comedy balaclavas, they were also showing the world the beauty of Celtic languages by singing in their native Welsh.”

The Scotsman’s five-star account of their Barrowlands gig mused that it was “all killer no filler” and added that it was a “joyous” Scottish return for a “beloved band.”

The Furries’ pop-up merch shop, Super Furry Supamarket will open at Cardiff’s St David’s Shopping Centre to celebrate their reunion shows .

For two days only, the Supamarket pop-up will showcase a limited-edition collection of merchandise, t-shirts and hoodies between 12pm-8pm. Click here to find out more on that shop.
