Firefighters were first called to the scene early on Sunday morning
Firefighters have been called to a large ship fire which has broken out at Newport Docks. Crews were called to the scene shortly after 5.30am on Sunday morning after reports of a fire involving a bulk carrier.
The affected vessel is called the Nord Houston, which was docked at the port overnight. It is carrying approximately 1,000 tonnes of scrap metal. A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “A significant number of resources have been deployed, including five pumping appliances, two hydraulic aerial platforms, and a range of specialist units.
“Firefighters are carrying out external firefighting operations using multiple main jets and an aerial ladder platform, with fire service boats in attendance to support water safety operations.
“A drone unit has been deployed to provide enhanced situational awareness, allowing crews to monitor fire development and identify any hotspots.
“South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is working closely with partner agencies, including Associated British Ports, harbour authorities, Natural Resources Wales, the police and the local authority, to ensure public safety and to assess and mitigate any potential environmental impact.”
The fire service confirmed on Sunday afternoon that the blaze was under control, and that crews from Duffryn, Maindee’s fire engine and aerial ladder platform, New Inn, Cwmbran’s high‑volume pump, Cardiff Central’s pump and aerial ladder platform, Whitchurch, Ebbw Vale’s boat and line rescue unit, and the incident command team remained in attendance at the scene.
Some crews will remain at the scene for the next 12-24 hours to continue monitoring the situation and to ensure there is no re‑ignition.
Chris Hadfield, Head of Operational Risk Management for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Our crews have worked exceptionally hard throughout the day to bring this complex incident under control.
“While the situation is now stable, a fire service presence will remain at Newport Docks to monitor conditions and ensure the fire does not reignite. We are grateful for the cooperation between our partner agencies and the public during this incident.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
