A man has been charged with murder following the death of a “well-loved” dad and grandad from Trevethin following an incident at a property on Bythway Road on Thursday, April 23. Aaron Cook, 37, has been charged with the murder of 74-year-old Nicholas ‘Brian’ Parfitt.
Cook is also facing charges for threats to kill and harassment. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Newport Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 27.
Gwent Police issued a statement on Saturday naming Mr Parfitt as the man who died at a property on Bythway Road in Trevithin, Pontypool, on Thursday afternoon. Police and paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service and Welsh Air Ambulance attended and Mr Parfitt was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mr Parfitt’s family paid tribute to him, saying: “Brian’s passing has been a shock to both the family and the community.
“He was a well-loved dad and grandad and highly thought of in the community.”
Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Inspector Shelly Comley said: “We understand that there has been a great deal of interest in this investigation.
“We ask that people consider how their language, especially comments made online, could impact our ability to bring anyone found to have committed a criminal offence to justice.
“Officers will remain in the area as our enquiries continue, so if anyone has any information please speak to our officers or contact us in the usual way.”

On Friday, April 24, the investigating police force said it had made contact with the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the incident and confirmed a referral will be submitted in line with standard procedures.
