Adored pet Flopsy disappeared into a field in 2022 – and may have a surprise yet in store for her owners! ‘It’s the weirdest thing. I mean, I don’t have the words.’
A missing rabbit from Cornwall has been miraculously reunited with its owners after vanishing four years ago – and being found on Easter Sunday.
Flopsy the pet rabbit disappeared in 2022 after running into Flambards in Helston and hopping into some nearby fields.
Her owner Laura Conway-Norris, who lives nearby, walks through the area daily – but despite reports of sightings over the years, she was never able to find Flopsy herself.
It was only when a kind local shared that a rabbit had been seen near Flambards on Easter Sunday that Laura and her eight-year-old daughter Cora thought it could be her family’s pet.
“I thought, ‘it can’t be’,” the mum-of-four said.
“It can’t have survived four years in the wild, absolutely no way. But nobody else claimed her or came forward.
“We went up the lane and it was just sitting in this field where it used to sort of hang around just up from our house and it was sitting in a little sheep hut.”
The district nurse and her family decided to take the rabbit to the vets to make sure she was Flopsy and didn’t belong to anyone else.
The vet told them there was no reason to suggest the bunny wasn’t theirs – but warned there’s a chance she could have fallen pregnant during her time in the wild.
The family is now prepared for all eventualities, while making sure their garden is secure so Flopsy can roam freely.
Laura said: “She’s been given a full clean bill of health, which is amazing. She’s chipped now and she’s vaccinated.
“I think the most important thing going forward now is making sure she’s got a really big space to run around. Luckily, we’ve got a nice big garden, so as long as we can make sure it’s secure, she can just run in the garden. But she seems really happy.”
She added: “It’s the weirdest thing. We didn’t actually get her until Easter Monday, but for her to be found on Easter Sunday, I mean, I don’t have the words.”
Hundreds of people have since commented on Flopsy’s return, with kind stranger Sharon Trathen initially sharing her whereabouts on Facebook with a photo saying: “Anyone lost a rabbit?? Currently up Captains Lane in a field.” She told us she also tried to catch it a few times.
Sophie Morgan wrote: “This is miraculous. Most pet bunnies will not last long at all if they escape or are ‘released’ into the wild.
“How this rabbit has survived this long is quite incredible without vaccinations and the need for continual water supply and protection from predators. Glad the bunny is home safe with its family.”
Trudz Hoswell added: “Omg this amazing news!! The best Easter gift ever for you all.”
Ales Hunter said: “That’s amazing how she survived all that time, that’s incredible being a pet rabbit.”
