The road was shut by emergency services
A bashed railway bridge has been hit by a lorry – again. The railway bridge in Newport, Essex, was struck by a HGV in the early hours of this morning.
Fire crews were called to the railway bridge on Cambridge Road, Newport, at around 1am this morning (April 10). They found that a HGV had struck the railway bridge in the village, and subsequently fallen on its side.
The bridge’s signage states that the bridge has a 4.3m height limit. The road was closed while emergency services worked to resolve this incident.
Newport Fire Station said that the road would likely remain closed through the night until the bridge has been rendered safe by engineers. At the time of writing, the road is now open.
This is not the first time that the bridge has been struck by a HGV. A similar incident happened just six weeks ago, with fire crews warning drivers to know the ‘suitability’ of their vehicle.
