It will provide a new range of services and has been granted planning permission from Cardiff Council for the alterations
A giant Cardiff pet shop is set to get a new mezzanine level to provide a range of pet treatments. Pets at Home has received permission from Cardiff Council to install a mezzanine floor in its Ty Glas Retail Park, Llanishen, store, to be used for a pet care, treatment and grooming facility.
The application reads: “The mezzanine will comprise three consulting rooms, where general pet care advice is provided and routine treatments (such as flea and worming treatments, vaccinations, and preventative care) are undertaken.”
It continues: “The facility will also accommodate minor procedures including X-rays and routine operations such as spaying.
“Provision for dog and cat grooming is also included. Access to the Vets4Pets facility will be exclusively through the main Pets at Home store.
“There will be no separate customer entrance or exit, ensuring that the veterinary element cannot function independently from the principal retail use. “
The opening hours of the service will be in line with the Pets at Home shop generally, which are 09:00 – 20:00 Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 19:00 on Saturdays and 10:00-16:00 on Sundays and bank holidays. Never miss a Cardiff story by signing up to our daily newsletter here
This arrangement “reinforces the position that the veterinary services are subordinate to and integrated with the primary retail use of the building”.
Pets at Home is the UK’s largest retailer of “pets and pet care goods”. According to the application, it has “established a recognised retail model that combines the sale of pets and associated goods with a suite of complementary in-store pet care services.”
It continues: “The proposed veterinary and grooming facility forms a continuation of that well-established format, supporting the primary retail function rather than operating as an independent standalone use.”
The planning officer’s report reads: “It is considered that the proposed use of the mezzanine floor would not result in any unreasonable loss of amenity to adjacent business occupiers to that experienced by the existing uses in terms of noise or smell and hours of operation.”
