Man arrested after crimewave in market town among happiest places to live

Date:

Northumbria Police confirmed this morning that a man had been arrested in connection with a series of incidents last week

A man has been arrested following a “crimewave” in a Northumberland town. Three businesses were allegedly targeted over two nights in Hexham last week.

Specialist papercraft shop Hanji told ChronicleLive that a window was smashed and a cashbox with £30 in was taken on Monday, April 20. It was also alleged that Holland and Barrett and Card Factory on Fore Street were broken into the following night.

Northumbria Police confirmed today that a 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incidents. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Residents and visitors told ChronicleLive over the weekend that they were “surprised” by reports of crime in the town centre and that generally, they felt safe. Hexham Mayor Derek Kennedy and Coun Suzanne Fairless-Aitken both pointed out that Hexham has a “strong business community” and encouraged independent retailers who were concerned about the alleged incidents to get in touch with the town council.
