Senedd candidate in palliative care days after election

Date:

Caroline Jones was Reform UK’s ‘Wales manager’ before quitting the party in April

Politician Caroline Jones, who stood for election last week for the Senedd is currently receiving palliative care following a diagnosis of severe sepsis. The family have confirmed her diagnosis that happened “very suddenly” as “they try to come to terms with everything.”

Mrs Jones spent five years as a Senedd member, as regional member for South Wales West, between 2016 and 2021. She joined as a Ukip politician, and joined the Brexit Party during her term.

She left the group, serving as an independent before joining Reform UK. She had been working with their party on their election campaign for Wales, but quit Reform a month before the election, criticising the party and its organisation.

She remained a candidate, standing as an independent in the Pen-y-Bont Bro Morgannwg constituency. Ms Jones’ husband has shared a message to those who knew her saying she has severe sepsis and is receiving palliative care.

Writing on social media, Alun Williams wrote: “It is with heavy hearts that I must share that Caroline Jones is currently receiving palliative care following a diagnosis of severe sepsis.

“This has all happened very suddenly, and our family is trying to come to terms with everything while making sure Caroline is comfortable and surrounded by love.

“We know that Caroline means so much to many people, and we wanted to keep friends and loved ones informed. Your messages, thoughts, and prayers are deeply appreciated during this incredibly difficult time.

“As I said previously it is sudden and unexpected, painful to say the least. She cared so deeply and passionately for people and always wanted to help others. At the moment, we kindly ask for privacy and understanding as we focus on being with Caroline and supporting one another.

“Thank you for all your love and support. She will be truly and sadly missed. My whole world has come to an end. A gorgeous, vibrant and loving lady.”

A former prison officer, she often spoke in the Senedd on behalf of cancer patients and survivors – having herself fought the disease.

Ms Jones and her family have received many messages of love and support from friends, family, residents in her constituency and fellow politicians.

Bridgend councillor for Pyle, Kenfig Hill and Cefn Cribwr, Owain Clatworthy sent his thoughts and prayers to Alun and his family and has shared that he is: “Really saddened by the news about my friend, campaign manager & former Member of the Senedd Caroline Jones.”For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here
