ITV Emmerdale confirms return of troublemaker Kev in surprise comeback twist

Date:

Emmerdale has confirmed Chris Coghill will reprise his role as troublemaker Kev Townsend

Emmerdale has announced that Chris Coghill will return to the soap later this year, reprising his role as the charismatic and unpredictable Kev Townsend – in a comeback that is already set to cause plenty of drama in the village.

Fans of the ITV soap will remember Kev as a complex and often intimidating figure whose last appearance left plenty of unanswered questions. His return promises to shake things up once again, especially with a new business venture on the horizon that is bound to ruffle feathers among the locals.

Kev first arrived in the village under dramatic circumstances as the estranged husband of Robert Sugden, played by Ryan Hawley. Their relationship had a shocking backstory, with Robert having married Kev while he was in prison, believing he was terminally ill. In reality, Kev had lied about his condition in a desperate attempt to hold onto their relationship, immediately setting the tone for the character’s manipulative and unpredictable nature.

Viewers were later stunned to learn that Kev was also the biological father of Lewis Barton, played by Bradley Riches, adding another layer of emotional complexity to his storyline. Despite this, Lewis remains unaware of Kev’s true identity, a secret that continues to loom over the village.

Kev’s last appearance was nothing short of dramatic. After a tense encounter involving serial killer John Sugden, he managed to narrowly escape danger. Before leaving, he alerted Aaron, played by Danny Miller, to the threat, before fleeing the village altogether. At the time, Kev believed that staying away was the best way to protect his son, even if it meant keeping his distance for good. But now Kev is back and it seems that his story is far from over.

Emmerdale Producer, Laura Shaw, says: “Both Chris and the character of Kev made a massive impact on the show last year, so Chris is most definitely back by popular demand. With Kev’s son, Lewis, in the village still unaware of who his father is, it’s safe to say that there’s a lot of unfinished business and drama ahead.”

Chris Coghill adds: “I’m really pleased to be returning to Emmerdale, I had a brilliant time last year. Kev is a complex character that I love playing. He has psychopathic tendencies but also an energy and vulnerability that I think makes him pretty unique. I’m properly looking forward to getting back at it.”

Away from the Dales, Coghill has built an impressive career across television and film, with credits including The Bay, Slow Horses and Shameless. His return to Emmerdale is expected to air later this year, and if Kev’s track record is anything to go by, viewers can expect plenty more twists, tension and explosive drama when he makes his comeback.

Emmerdale broadcasts Monday to Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
