A double murderer has been sentenced after he attacked another inmate at HMP Frankland in County Durham, a category A prison that houses some of the UK’s most dangerous offenders. Hussain Bah, who is currently serving a life sentence for two murders committed in London, slashed John Henry Sayers with a makeshift weapon while both men were incarcerated last year.

The incident occurred on October 30, 2022, as Sayers was being escorted back to his cell. Bah used a sharpened lid from a tuna can to inflict a superficial wound near Sayers’ right ear. The two men were in the prison yard when Bah approached Sayers from behind, leading to the assault shortly before 11 am. Following the attack, prison guards swiftly apprehended Bah.

Bah, 22, pleaded guilty to charges of attempted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and possession of an offensive weapon. He appeared via video link at Teesside Crown Court for sentencing. The court heard that Bah was serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years for the two killings he committed in London in 2022, which occurred while he was on bail for a previous knife attack.

Prosecutor Jonathan Walker explained that Sayers had been segregated from other inmates due to prior incidents, and neither he nor Bah cooperated with the investigation afterward. Footage of the attack was reviewed by the court.

Bah’s defence counsel, Estelle Chambers, stated that his guilty pleas were a significant factor in his mitigation, emphasising that he accepted full responsibility and expressed remorse for his actions. The court was informed that Bah suffers from cognitive difficulties and has post-traumatic stress disorder linked to adverse childhood experiences.

Judge Francis Laird KC sentenced Bah to an additional 33 months in prison, to run consecutively with his current life sentence, meaning he will be 46 years old before starting this new sentence.
