Public Inquiry into Disgraced Neurosurgeon Sam Eljamel Begins in Edinburgh

The public inquiry into the actions of former neurosurgeon Sam Eljamel commences today, marking a significant moment for those who have raised concerns regarding his medical practices. Mr Eljamel served as a consultant at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee from 1995 until his suspension in December 2013, after allegations surfaced that he may have harmed up to 200 patients.

Originally scheduled for April, the stage one hearings were postponed due to issues related to the venue located at Waverley Gate in Edinburgh. However, these concerns have been resolved, and the hearings will now run for four weeks.

The inquiry’s first phase aims to examine various aspects of Mr Eljamel’s career, focusing on his professional trajectory, the circumstances leading to his supervision in 2013, and the document management systems within NHS Tayside.

Lord Weir, who chairs the inquiry, described today as an important milestone, stating the intention to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation. He expressed hope that the introductory hearings would provide valuable context for the proceedings ahead.

The opening day features an introductory address from Jamie Dawson KC, the senior counsel for the inquiry, followed by testimony from Liz Smith, a former MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, who represented some of Mr Eljamel’s patients and advocated for the public inquiry.

On September 9, Nicky Connor, the current chief executive of NHS Tayside, is set to provide evidence, along with a variety of witnesses from NHS Tayside, the Scottish Government, the University of Dundee, and various regulatory bodies.

Following his suspension in 2013, Sam Eljamel resigned in May 2014 and subsequently withdrew from the General Medical Register in 2015. He is believed to have returned to Libya to continue his medical practice.
