'We don't feel safe' say neighbours after teen stabbed in broad daylight

Police are continuing their investigations after a stabbing left a boy in hospital with serious injuries

People living near the scene of a 17-year-old boy’s stabbing in Bulwell say they feel they get little help from the police as one woman says: “We don’t feel safe on our street.”

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that officers were called to Coventry Road at around 5.30pm on Friday (April 3) after reports of a stabbing and the teenager was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

As police investigations continue, the sense from many in this part of Bulwell is that a more visible and proactive presence from officers is needed.

Nottinghamshire Live was met with initial hostility from some residents when they assumed at first glance that the reporter at their door was a police detective carrying out enquiries, with one exclaiming “oh no it’s them again”.

The incident took place near the Go Local Extra shop in Coventry Road and round the corner on Brook Close lives 80-year-old John Ball, who has been in the area for around 40 years.

Mr Ball said: “You never see a copper in Bulwell now. I call them taxi drivers instead of coppers, because all they do is sit in cars.

“It’s been going down and down over the last 10 years until it’s become pretty much non-existent in terms of policing.”

One young woman, who lives on the other side of Brook Close, right near where the stabbing happened, said: “We don’t feel safe on our street. I told the police when they came round yesterday that we get no help from them.

“It’s not going to get any better, not for us anyway. We’ve got footage [of the incident] and everything.”

Agreeing that improved policing was needed, Sean Doherty recalled the drainpipe at his home being “smashed up” by vandals and there being “no interest” in terms of police investigating it.

The 30-year-old, originally from Rushcliffe, said: “I came back and saw the police cars but I wasn’t in when it happened.

“It’s not uncommon around here. It gets quiet from October until March and then it all starts to kick off again from April.

“I’m just relieved nobody has died this time.

“I’ve lived here since 2022 and I fixed my mortgage pre-Liz Truss and, when that’s up next summer, I’m out of here.

“It’s not too bad, but it just kicks off occasionally and you end up getting used to it.”

One 62-year-old man, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years, said: “I was in the kitchen peeling potatoes and then I saw all the police cars. I haven’t heard anything more about it this morning.

“It’s the most I’ve seen living in this area and it’s getting a bit too close for comfort now. The police were going door-to-door asking if anyone had CCTV footage showing people running away, but I didn’t have any.”

The man reported seeing a trail of what appeared to be blood still on the pavement outside the Go Local Extra store on Saturday morning, running the full width of the pavement and just into the road.

A large police cordon was in place on Friday night, with police said to have left the scene just before 10pm.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 519 of April 3 2026. At the time of writing, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
